KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)-- Malaysia's Proton Edar Sdn. Bhd. Tuesday said it aims to sell 23% more cars locally in the year ending Mar. 31, 2005. "We are looking at 190,000 units, up from 155,000 a year earlier," Proton Edar Chief Executive Ahmad Tifli Mohd Talha told reporters.
earlier Tuesday, Proton sold 96 of its Waja cars to Shell Malaysia Bhd. in a deal worth MYR6 million. Proton Edar is the sales and marketing arm of national car maker Proton Holdings Bhd. (5304.KU). Tifli also said Proton will launch a new small "competitively-priced" car but declined to be more specific. Analysts expect Proton to replace its aging Tiara model in the first quarter.
