The Alfa 147

A special edition of Alfa Romeo’s top-selling model, the Alfa 147, has been launched with £1000 worth of extra features.

Available in both 3 and 5-door petrol and diesel versions, the limited edition cars add a CD player, exclusive 16 inch spoked alloy wheels and a rear roof spoiler to the already impressive Turismo specification. Standard equipment on Turismo versions includes ABS brakes with EBD (electronic brake distribution), electrically-operated, heated door mirrors, climate control, leather steering wheel, alarm and immobiliser.Just 200 examples of this sporty car are available through the Alfa Romeo dealer network.

Alfa 147 1.9 JTD Turismo

Alfa Romeo is encouraging buyers to sample the advantages of modern diesel power by offering diesel versions of the Alfa 147 for the on-the-road price of the corresponding petrol version.

The offer means customers can save up to £1100 on Alfa Romeo’s JTD and advanced JTD M-Jet engines which combine impressive performance figures with excellent fuel consumption. The 3-door Alfa 147 1.9 JTD Turismo is now available for £13,950, the on-the-road price of a 1.6 T Spark Turismo and the 140 bhp 1.9-litre 16v M-Jet Lusso can be purchased for £16,550, the same as a 147 2.0 T Spark Lusso.

Introduced in the UK last year, the state-of-the-art 1.9 JTD M-Jet 16v engine delivers maximum power of 140 bhp @ 4000 rpm and 305 Nm of torque @ 2000 rpm. The quiet power unit takes the 147 to a top speed of 129 mph.

Wishbone suspension

Fascinating styling, plenty of temperament and superb engineering. The Alfa Romeo Brera combines these distinctive features with others, playing its trump cards in the field of safety and dynamic behaviour. While ‘enjoyable driving’ has always been one of the strong points of any car from Alfa Romeo, ‘enjoyable travelling’ now becomes a necessary choice when the cars have to guarantee excellent comfort as well as the Alfa temperament. For this reason, the Alfa Romeo Brera fits double wishbone suspension at the front and a Multilink system at the rear. This layout guarantees excellent dynamic performance but also superb comfort. Whoever sits at the wheel controls the behaviour of this great sports car, but certainly does not forgo the excellent comfort guaranteed by the suspension. To which the Alfa Romeo Brera adds a sporty trim and Q4 four-wheel drive on some versions.

The Alfa Romeo Brera is fitted with the most advanced electronic devices to control the car’s dynamic behaviour: the sophisticated VDC system with sporty, non-intrusive calibration, complete with MSR and ASR (the former adjusts braking torque when changing down, while the latter limits wheel slip when accelerating).

2.4 JTD turbodiesel

The engine is the heart and real strength of every Alfa Romeo model. Under a fascinating line and strong personality, Alfa cars conceal a range of superb engines with advanced technology and generous performance.

The same is true of the Alfa Romeo Brera, which offers a choice of two JTS petrol engines (2.2 delivering 185 bhp and 3.2 delivering 260 bhp), and a 2.4 JTD turbodiesel that delivers 200 bhp (available after the launch), combined with two different gearboxes depending on the version: 6-speed mechanical or automatic (not available at the launch). In other words, this is a car capable of exciting performance, but is also ideal for everyday use.

The Alfa Romeo Brera

The Alfa Romeo Brera aims to maintain continuity with the past, while enlarging the interior space and raising the standard of life. On a car with a great temperament, the driving position is the hub around which the interior is built. The Alfa Brera is no exception, as you would expect from a car born to offer exuberant performance and an extremely striking design. So the seats provide outstanding containment, and a sporty design but this does not mean forgoing comfort in the rear, which remains at the highest levels for this segment.

By folding down the rear seats, the luggage capacity is increased from 236 to 546 litres, which hints at the generous loading area. The Alfa Romeo Brera comes in three outfits, all lavishly equipped with electronic and telematic equipment, and the interior ambience is always welcoming and sophisticated, thanks to the quality materials used and the introduction of innovative solutions, such as the large fixed sunroof which increases the luminosity in the car and the passengers’ sense of space, making the line sleeker and more flowing.

Alfa Romeo models

This does not in any way diminish the elegance of the lines which flow smoothly, from front to back, right down to the built-in bumpers and light clusters with their converging wedge shape.

The exterior line is a succession of classical references, an ideal place where traditional Alfa styling cues are reproposed in a modern key. This is evident at first glance. For example, the rear window that recalls the window of the Giulietta Sprint of many years ago. Or the rear end which reiterates the distinctive traits of recent Alfa Romeo models. And at the front, the bonnet recalls those of cars of the Fifties, dominated by the shield set at the centre. And finally the larger rear light clusters and the four exhaust outlets reinforce the impression of a powerful sports car, like the large tyres and the lovely alloys that are standard throughout the range.

Bibendum Challenge 2002

To achieve this result, they started from the excellent premises of the fascinating Brera prototype, which had excited the press and the general public, winning numerous international awards: the ‘Best of Show’, awarded by the magazine Autoweek at the Geneva Motor Show, ‘Best of Show’ in the Prototype category at the Villa d’Este Concours d’Elégance, 2 prizes for its category at the Bibendum Challenge 2002, one as ‘one of the most elegant in the world’; and the title of ‘the most fascinating car’ at the Super Car Rally 2002 from Paris to Monte Carlo. A worthy curriculum, which the new Alfa Romeo Brera now inherits.

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in collaboration with the Alfa Romeo Styling Centre, the model represents the state of the art in the world of the coupe, a strong compact car, mistress of the road with a strong personality. First of all, this fascinating ‘2+2’ has generous dimensions: it is 1,830 mm wide, 4,413 mm long and 1,372 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,525 millimetres, although the heightened taper of the front and rear make it look very compact.

Fascinating ‘Brera’ concept

When the fascinating ‘Brera’ concept car was presented at the Geneva Motor Show two years ago, Giorgetto Giugiaro said: ‘It is not a repetition, but a bud that will flower’. Today, this dream has come true: the new Alfa Romeo Brera has its world preview on the same Swiss stage, and will be on the market at the end of 2005.

Sportiness and elegance combined in unique, exclusive styling. Harmonious forms and volumes which, when they are supported by Alfa Romeo mechanical and engineering excellence, produce a beautiful, powerful, solid car. This is very briefly the spirit of the new coupé which will arouse extreme emotions and guarantee superbly enjoyable driving. The engineers and stylists only had one goal: to combine sportiness with roominess and the quality of life on board.

Alphas powerful 3.2 V6 24v

The final edition of Alfa Romeo’s classic two-seater sports car is now available in three striking exterior colours, featuring unique 17 inch spoked alloy wheels teamed with black leather trim.

The special version Alfa Spiders are available in Alfa Red, Lightning Blue and Light Grey metallic external colours with a choice of 2.0 JTS and the powerful 3.2 V6 24v engines under the bonnet. The final edition of just 80 remaining examples of this classic car boasts all the features of the Lusso specification, including electric roof, leather steering wheel, heated electric door mirrors and automatic climate control.

Priced at £23,510 for the 165 bhp 2.0 JTS and £28,300 for the 240 bhp 3.2 V6 24v, the Alfa Spider, designed by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo in collaboration with Pininfarina, has enjoyed great success since its introduction to the UK in 1996 and is the last in a line of Spiders stretching back over 50 years.

Alpha Giulia Sprint GT

The judges recognised the skill with which the stylists at Bertone and Centro Stile Alfa Romeo had drawn on Alfa Romeo's extensive heritage, in particular the 1900 SS, the Giulietta Sprint, the Alfetta and Giulia Sprint GT, yet had produced a car that has its own unique style and character.

The sought-after annual Design Trophy awarded by French publication L'Automobile also celebrated the Alfa GT’s styling, with its readers voting for the Italian coupé ahead of competition that included the new Mercedes CLS and the Citroën C4.

Wolfgang Egger, head of Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, and Lilli Bertone accepted the award at the 26th Trophées de l’Automobile, their joint presence marking Alfa Romeo’s long-standing cooperation with various Italian designers.

Alfa GT

Alfa Romeo’s stunning new coupé, the Alfa GT, has triumphed over stiff competition to win two important European accolades for its outstanding design.

As well as winning the prestigious Design Trophy awarded by the French publication, L’Automobile, the Alfa GT has triumphed at the annual awards for the L'Automobile Più Bella del Mondo (The Most Beautiful Car in the World), winning the votes of an international jury of leading designers, artists, engineers and architects in Milan, Italy.

The jurors elected the Alfa GT the most beautiful coupé/cabriolet in the world because of its classically seductive Italian design, interpreting Alfa Romeo’s traditional styling influences in a modern way to produce a car that is both assertive and elegant, spaciously versatile and uncompromisingly sporty.

Alfa Romeo cars

Both Companies have contributed greatly to the development of industrial design; each establishing a style and persona that creates instant recognition, to make their products stand out even in a mass-market.

While Apple products are appreciated for their unique and original design and are extremely distinctive in the Hi-Tech world, Alfa Romeo cars are an expression of that unmistakable Italian style and extraordinary technological and human heritage which has written some of the most important pages of automobile history.

Apple and Alfa Romeo

Apple is recognised as one of the most dynamic companies in the Hi-Tech field, confirmed by its current market leadership in digital music players thanks to the iPod family, while Alfa Romeo represents the very best blend of style, passion and technology within the automotive field.

The collaboration between Apple and Alfa Romeo, between two recognised innovators, expresses itself in a very exciting manner where both Companies share the same objective: to offer their customers the opportunity to create and enjoy their personal musical "experience" seamlessly both at home and while driving; with distinction, style and appeal.

Romeo

Mac World 2005, the most important exhibition dedicated to the Mac environment, took place in San Francisco from the 10th to the 12th of January, attracting more than 150.000 visitors.

For this prestigious event Apple has announced a collaboration with Alfa Romeo, to allow the use of iPod - the revolutionary digital music player - on board some Alfa Romeo models, as fully integrated standard equipment.

Both Companies see this as more than merely a commercial agreement, because it reaffirms that both companies share brand values of technological innovation and a commitment to outstanding design as the way to retain a distinctive personality for their products and to offer their customers a unique experience.

Alfa Q4 traction

Together with all the delights one expects in an Alfa Romeo, this new car delivers outstanding dynamic performance thanks to the use of quadrilateral front suspension and Multilink rear suspension. Along with the excellent driving experience, comfort is further enhanced by the integral Alfa Q4 traction control system installed in some versions. Brera offers the most sophisticated electronic systems to monitor and control key dynamic parameters of braking and roadholding to deliver greater driving safety.

This then is the essence of the new Brera, a car that will create enormous interest, a coupe that promises both a great driving experience and outstanding levels of comfort.

Brera 2.4 JTD 200 bhp

Brera is a 2+2 of generous dimensions: 1830mm wide, 4414mm in length and 1372mm high, although the deeply tapered front and rear styling creates the impression of a very compact car. The interior has an ambience that is both intimate and sophisticated. This comes from the use of high quality materials and the introduction of some novel ideas such as the wide fixed glass roof that creates more natural interior light for passengers, adding to the sensation of spaciousness inside, while also giving the car a streamlined exterior appearance.

Available in three levels of trim, Brera also offers customers a choice of a 2.4 JTD 200 bhp turbodiesel power unit, and two petrol engines (185 bhp 2.2 JTS or 260 bhp 3.2) coupled to either an automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual gearbox depending on the version.

Alfa Romeo Brera

The new Alfa Romeo Brera is to make its international public debut at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show in March, the same venue that was chosen for the first public appearance in 2002 of the original Giorgetto Giugiaro designed concept car, which went on to gain international acclaim.

Due to go on sale by year’s end, the new Alfa Romeo Brera encapsulates those characteristics most synonymous with the brand - sportiness and elegance - in a unique and exclusive style. The harmony of Brera’s shape and size, allied to the outstanding engineering and driveability of an Alfa Romeo, makes for a car which is both beautiful, strong and durable, a car which sets the standards for all coupés.

The new model features

The new model features important exclusive equipment that increases comfort: Cruise control, rain, dusk and parking sensors (front and rear), satellite navigator with maps (even with ‘bird’s eye view’ display), voice controls and a built-in GSM hands-free telephone, automatic climate control with dual or tri-zone distribution and temperature, a radio-CD player (including MP3 files) and 10-disc CD-Changer, a BOSE® Hi-Fi Sound System with AutoPilot for automatic sound compensation and a central speaker on the facia for better acoustics, seats with electrical adjustment, folding rear seats and push-button ignition on the console.

New Alfa Romeo 159

The new Alfa Romeo 159 offers the evolved permanent 4-wheel drive system with three differentials (a Torsen C self-locking central differential) adopted on the Crosswagon Q4. The heart of this project is the ‘Alfa Romeo Q4 four-wheel drive’ system which splits torque constantly and dynamically between the four wheels, reaching the highest levels of active safety and sportiness. The Torsen C self-locking central differential manages the drive torque in the best possible way, sending about 57% to the rear wheels and 43% to the front. The system also guarantees excellent traction in all grip conditions by automatically checking any slipping.

The car’s dynamic behaviour is controlled by a number of sophisticated electronic systems. VDC first of all, which guarantees absolute control over the car in all conditions, no matter how extreme, with a sporty calibration worthy of a true Alfa, whose chassis guarantees superb roadholding: VDC lets the driver enjoy his control over the vehicle and never intervenes intrusively. On the other hand, when he changes down suddenly in poor grip conditions, MSR (Motor Schleppmoment Regelung) intervenes, giving torque back to the engine to prevent skidding due to wheel lock. The other systems that supplement VDC are: ASR (Anti Slip Regulation), HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance) which intervenes during emergency braking, the ABS system complete with EBD, and the Hill Holder for hill starts. Active safety is also enhanced by sophisticated bi-xenon headlights.

Alfa Romeo 159 235/45 R 18

The new Alfa Romeo 159 shows its ‘Alfa’ pedigree in full, for example, by guaranteeing control and entertaining driving that admit no compromise. Travelling comfort and dynamic behaviour, features peculiar to Alfa Romeo cars, become real strengths on this model. The car has an interesting suspension layout, the fruit of a new project that set extremely high standards of excellence. It has ‘high’ double wishbones at the front, and Multilink at the rear.

This means a greater capacity to absorb road roughness, more linearity and precision in response to the steering (the most direct of the standard saloons), superb roadholding, maximum stability in high speed manoeuvres and the agility of a true Alfa Romeo on narrow mixed routes. The braking system is also the most competitive in its category, reflecting Alfa Romeo’s great tradition in this field. The Alfa Romeo 159’s excellent road behaviour is also due to the tyres which achieve the best balance between handling and comfort. To minimise swinging on bends while guaranteeing excellent absorption of obstacles, the Alfa Romeo technicians worked with suppliers to develop special tyres, the largest in their category, right up to 235/45 R 18.

Alfa Romeo 2.4 JTDM

On the latest generation of ‘Common Rail’ engines, the JTD units with Multijet technology, turbocharging is entrusted to a variable geometry turbo and intercooler. The 1.9 JTDM exploits a specific turbine developed by Alfa Romeo while the 2.4 JTDM has a new cylinder head and new conrods in ‘fractured’ steel. The three engines all meet Euro 4 requirements, and incorporate a particulate trap (DPF) which eliminates particulate almost entirely, in line with the latest Euro 5 indications (it is a ‘for life’ system that does not need to be regenerated with additives).

And finally, the range includes new mechanical gearboxes, all with six speeds and featuring short strokes, precise engagement and limited loads. Automatic transmissions and a robotised Selespeed gearbox will also be available, all with six speeds.

Alpha Romeo 3.2 V6 JTS

This striking aesthetic styling is set off by a broad, comprehensive range of engines. First of all, the three new JTS engines with continuous dual variable valve timing (inlet and exhaust): the 3.2 V6 24v (191 kW - 260 bhp), the 2.2 (136 kW - 185 bhp) and the 1.9 (118 kW – 160 bhp), with a specific power output between 81 and 85 bhp/l. All the engines meet Euro 4 standards, exploiting the direct petrol injection in full, a particular combustion system known as JTS: Jet Thrust Stoichiometric. For the customer, this means brilliant engine performance, which increases the driving enjoyment and the performance of the car. The torque values of the three engines are equally outstanding, and 88% is already available at 2,000 rpm: 322 Nm (32.8 kgm) at 4,500 rpm for the 3.2 V6 JTS, 230 Nm (23.4 kgm) at 4,500 rpm for the 2.2 JTS, and 190 Nm (19.4 kgm) at 4,500 rpm for the 1.9 JTS.

Those are the petrol engines. But Alfa Romeo has always been on the leading edge in the field of diesel engines too, epitomised by the 2.4 JTDM 5-cylinder 20v engine (147 kW - 200 bhp at 4000 rpm) and torque of 400 Nm (40.8 kgm at 2000 rpm), and the two 1.9 JTDM: the first is a ‘16v’ delivering 110 kW (150 bhp at 4000 rpm) and torque of 320 Nm (32.6 kgm at 2000 rpm), the second is an ‘8v’ delivering 88 kW (120 bhp at 4000 rpm) and torque of 280 Nm (28.6 kgm at 2000 rpm).

Alfa 159 project

With the new Alfa 159 project, Alfa Romeo aims to position itself at the top of the class for passive safety. The Alfa Romeo engineers have designed and developed a new ‘premium’ floorpan which adopts high performance materials, multiply sheet metal and laser welding. From the viewpoint of the architecture, the bodyshell also benefits from numerous measures such as the use of boxed elements that are rigidly connected transversely and vertically, three load lines in the front, longitudinals that run the whole length of the car, built-in structures and a larger number of spot welds around structural nodes. The result is the excellent torsional rigidity of the bodyshell, the best in its segment: over 180,000 daNm/rad.

The Alfa Romeo 159 boasts as many as eight airbags (including special bags to protect the knees and sidebags that extend all along the windows area); innovative restraint systems (pretensioners on the clasp, and decreasing load limiters on the seat-belts), and front seats with an ‘anti-whiplash’ device which brings the head-restraint nearer to the occupants’ necks in the event of a rear impact.

Alpha

To underline the functional continuity between the facia and the console, the designers aimed to achieve stylistic continuity between them: the console, which is raised as if stretching towards the facia, has a sporty gearlever with short, precise movements, and a comfortable armrest that incorporates a large insulated storage compartment. The interior achieves a perfect balance between elegance and sportiness, an equation that Alfa Romeo translates into refined colour combinations, quality fabrics, precious fine grain leather and luxurious materials (like the aluminium mouldings).

The range includes three specification levels, each featuring specific ‘natural’ interior upholstery. The sophisticated ‘slush moulding’ technology with which the facia was made, guarantees a refined opaque effect and a surface that is soft to the touch. The customer will appreciate the wrapround, finely modelled seats, which are made with carefully selected materials paying great attention to the details.

Alpha Romeo

In other words, sleek but solid, dynamic but robust: only outstanding stylistic balance can combine such different characteristics. For example the ‘muscular’ wing which, next to the generous wheels, marks the widest point of the car, unequivocally conveying the ideal of a car that is firmly ‘anchored to the ground’.

In spite of its capacious size, the rear end, with its beautifully balanced form, blends perfectly with the front, setting off its unique personality, and has a horizontal design, underlined by a chromed double exhaust tail-pipe on the more powerful versions. And it is topped off by a small spoiler which combines styling and practicality, right above the logo which is positioned where it is immediately visible, and the elongated lights, divided by the slit of the boot, which include cylindrical shapes derived from the styling of the front headlights. And finally, the new model offers a choice of 14 different colours.

Alfa Romeo 159

The new model is roomier than the 156, and more comfortable, a strong point that is confirmed by its generous dimensions: it is 4,660 mm long, 1,828 mm wide and 1,417 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,700 millimetres.

Like the external styling, the interior of the Alfa Romeo 159 also represents an evolved expression of the sportiness and elegance embodied by Alfa. It was defined around the driving position, focusing attention on the driver: excellent ratios for the distances between pedals, seat, steering wheel and gearbox give him a sense of total control over the car, which produces the enjoyable driving so typical of Alfa Romeo. The facia and wrapround centre console incorporate all the driving instruments and are turned ergonomically towards the driver. The speedometer, rev counter and other instruments, all strictly analogue, are circular with clear, refined, extremely legible graphics. The anti-glare lip accentuates the ‘boat’ shape of the main instruments, confirming a feature peculiar to Alfa Romeo design that is based on a deep-rooted attention to volumes and mature treatment of surfaces.

Alfa Romeo Styling Centre

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in collaboration with the Alfa Romeo Styling Centre, the new car has a number of distinctive features that highlight its strong personality and make it immediately recognisable, in the best Alfa tradition. Starting from the front, which is strong and essential, dominated by the Alfa Romeo family feeling of the characteristic cloverleaf sporting the large shield. The line of the entire car springs from here, combining a light stylistic ‘aggressiveness’ with strikingly elegant forms: an impression that is underlined by the light clusters, which are delightful design features.

The trapezoid shape of the front view accentuates the car’s sensation of solidity, highlighted by the way the passenger compartment rests on a powerful ‘shoulder’. This runs all along the waistline of the car, broadening considerably when it reaches the rear pillar. This pillar has a double stylistic function: it links to the curve of the rear window, above the rear axle (another clear stylistic expression of strength, robustness and dynamism), and embraces the passenger compartment thanks to the stylistic device of the classic Alfa Romeo ‘elbow’. The front pillar is set further back to make the line look sleeker, underlining the presence of the powerful engine, and making the passenger compartment look more compact, improving visibility on bends.

The Alfa Romeo 159

The Alfa Romeo 159, the first of a new family that will replace the 156, makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. This original saloon is the heir to a successful model and it continues where the 156 left off, aiming to become the new benchmark for the segment.

The new Alfa Romeo 159 will be on the market in the Summer; it has an elegant, sinuous line, which combines generous dimensions with the compactness typical of Alfa Romeo sports cars, thanks to a balanced play of proportions and volumetric ratios. The result is a prestigious car that combines refined ‘Italian’ styling with Alfa Romeo’s sporty elegance.

UK TRACKER technology

TRACKER Retrieve is the entry-level model, requiring the owner to contact TRACKER HQ in the event of a theft. TRACKER Monitor includes a remote sensor, which alerts TRACKER HQ if the vehicle is illegally moved. TRACKER Horizon operates as per Monitor, but incorporates satellite positioning technology as well. TRACKER’s latest model is the TRACKER Echo, which operates across the whole of Europe as well as the UK.

More than 580,000 vehicles in the UK use TRACKER technology. Police have recovered over 12,000 vehicles worth more than £237m since 1993 and made over 1,600 arrests.

For more information call TRACKER Network log on to they Tracker Website. TRACKER is also available from leading car dealerships and independent authorised retailers.

Tracker - CCTV

As the drivers headed off, they realised that the cars’ petrol tanks were almost empty. The convoy pulled into a garage and proceeded to fill up. This strange sight was enough to alert the garage operator who made sure the bizarre incident was caught on CCTV.

Audi employees arriving for work at around 9am the same day immediately contacted TRACKER. The police found the six cars fitted with TRACKER in Rainham, Essex that afternoon and subsequently made six arrests. Two out of the three vehicles not fitted with TRACKER were found later on, the last one is still missing.

TRACKER is operated by all 52 of the nation’s police forces and approved by 36 motor manufacturers. The electronic homing device, secretly hidden in a vehicle is activated in the event of a theft. Police vehicles fitted with detection equipment can follow the signal emitted by the unit, leading them to the vehicle’s exact location.

Audi TRACKER systems

n a daring dawn raid thieves made off with nine Audi TT's, stolen from an Audi dealership this September. Unfortunately for the criminals, six of the vehicles, with a combined retail value of £240,000, were fitted with TRACKER systems and were recovered within 24 hours.

In the early hours of the morning, a well prepared gang of crooks popped the sills of a window in the Audi showroom, without triggering the alarm. Gaining entry, one of them crawled across the floor, dodging the infra-red security beams, and took around 60 sets of keys from the storage cabinet.

Retracing his steps, he returned with his spoils to the rest of the gang. It was then a simple process of elimination to find the keys to the nine TT's. One of the gang took a tenth set of keys, those of a brand new Audi A6, which he started up and raced off the dealership’s forecourt. His intention was to smash the bollards that prevent the unauthorised departure of cars from the site. He managed this, writing off the A6 in the process.

2005 Model Year A2 range

Rationalised 2005 Model Year A2 range features Special Edition petrol and TDI models.New versions of the advanced aluminium-bodied Audi A2 are set to make its space efficiency, fuel frugality and premium brand quality even more easily attainable. The new A2 1.4 (75PS) Special Edition and A2 1.4 TDI (75PS) Special Edition models are available to order now at OTR prices of £12,715 and £13,695 respectively for first deliveries in January 2005.

Based on the standard A2 model, the new Special Edition versions gain key items of equipment that help to give them an overall price advantage over outgoing equivalents of around £2,000 in each case. With immediate effect they replace all other existing A2 Standard, SE and Sport models.

A2 1.4 TDI Special Edition

Special Edition models add electronic climate control and a Concert radio with single CD player to the A2 standard equipment list, which includes 15-inch alloy wheels, remote control central locking, electric front windows and mirrors and a full complement of safety and security features. All optional extras currently offered for outgoing Standard models will be available to A2 Special Edition customers.

The advanced design of the Audi A2 flouts convention. It remains the only volume production car to feature a body shell built entirely from aluminium, reducing its weight by over 40 per cent compared to an equivalent steel-bodied counterpart. Combined with a very low drag coefficient of just 0.28, this brings benefits in ride comfort, handling agility, performance and fuel economy.

The A2 1.4 TDI Special Edition is capable of covering up to an impressive 64.2 mpg (combined cycle), produces an exceptionally low CO2 output of 116g/km, can accelerate from rest to 62mph in 12.3 seconds and, where permissible, is good for a 107mph top speed.

The new A6 Avant

The high quality of the materials and finish is typical of Audi interiors. A distinctively sporty flair and ergonomic perfection characterise the interior, and the driving area's architecture seems to surround and integrate the driver.

The load area of the new A6 Avant likewise radiates sophistication and innovation. An ingenious securing concept with a large number of clever configurations permits an unprecedented level of versatility and variability. The new Audi A6 Avant will open for UK ordering during the first quarter of 2005, and first deliveries will commence in spring 2005.

A6 Avant's supremacy

Audi is adding a new chapter to the success story of the Avant: the new Audi A6 Avant represents a unique blend of design and dynamism, driving pleasure and functionality. With countless innovations, a high standard of comfort and luxurious equipment, the Audi A6 Avant is poised to extend its lead within its competitive field.

Powerful TDI and petrol engines with up to eight cylinders and 246 kW (335 bhp) maximum output are the source of the new A6 Avant's supremacy. Front-wheel or quattro permanent four-wheel drive ensure that the engine's power is always translated reliably into traction. Power which, thanks to the advanced suspension design and very rigid bodyshell, opens up new horizons in driving dynamics.

The latest A4 2.0SE

The latest A4 also makes just as much sense as ever as a business proposition for fleet drivers. The 2.0 SE, for example, attracts the lowest benefit-in-kind tax liability in the class, and when combined with the proven seven-speed multitronic automatic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) will cost a higher rate tax payer around £700 less annually than its nearest competitor. The 1.8 T and 1.9 TDI (130PS) models hold a similarly impressive advantage over their closest rivals, with savings of around £500 per annum possible in each case. Equally importantly,

2.0 FSI and 1.9 TDI 130 versions post the lowest running costs in their class. The new Audi A4 range starts with the 1.6 Saloon at £18,765, and is headed by the 3.2 FSI quattro Avant at £28,725.

Audi EU4-compliant 3.0 V6 TDI

The increased desirability of the latest 26-model A4 Saloon and Avant ranges is a key factor in determining the future demand that drives residual values. This enhanced appeal has been achieved not just through re-sculpting every body panel beneath the roof section, but also by major additions to the engine range and revisions to dynamics.

New engine highlights such as the acclaimed turbo charged 2.0 T FSI and 3.2 V6 FSI and the exceptional EU4-compliant 3.0 V6 TDI have been combined with heavily revised fully independent suspension, new transmissions, a new and even more responsive steering system and upgraded braking. Complemented by a revised and even more technologically advanced cabin boasting a quality of finish that remains unparalleled in the class, these changes have brought new levels of driver appeal to the A4.

Audi A4 models

Now open for UK ordering, the latest Audi A4 models will retain significantly more of their value after three years or 60,000 miles than their prestige German rivals, according to predictions in the latest issue of CAP Monitor, the leading Industry guide to future values.

Normally quoted as the percentage of the total purchase price retained after the three- year period, the residual value figures predicted by CAP Monitor for a cross section of new A4 models are at least three per cent, and up to 7 per cent, higher than German equivalents. The A4 1.9 TDI SE, for example, is expected to achieve 42 per cent of its original purchase price, up to 7 per cent higher than key competitors, with the new 3.0 V6 TDI quattro running it close at 39 per cent, up to 6 per cent higher. In the petrol range, the 1.8 T SE Saloon is expected to hold a 3 per cent advantage over rivals at 40 per cent.

Audi tyre mobility system

As an option the new Audi A6 Avant is available with a choice of ten different versions of wheel up to 18 inches in diameter and running on tyres up to 245/45 R18. Even in winter, the A6 driver has the choice of three wheel designs of up to 7x17 inches in size and running on 225/50 tyres.

All new Audi A6 Avant models come as standard with the Audi tyre mobility system, but may also be fitted with a spare wheel as an option. The electromechanical parking brake as well as a light and rain sensor including coming home/leaving home function are further standard fitments.

Another standard feature on all A6 models in the range is two-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning - comprising separate controls for the driver and front passenger - with enhanced output and optimised acoustics, a virtue that cannot be taken for granted even in this segment. Recirculated-air and pollen filters and a sun sensor assure maximum climate comfort. The occupants' well-being can be further enhanced by the option of deluxe automatic air conditioning plus with indirect ventilation, air humidity and air quality sensors and extended climate control of the rear compartment via air vents in the B-posts.

Audi 7x16 inch alloy wheels

In the event of a collision the car's occupants are effectively protected by the robust structure of the body with predefined deformation and a highly stable passenger cell. And in conjunction with the seat belts, the front and side airbags as well as the sideguard head airbag system, which covers virtually the entire side window area, afford superior safety and protection for the driver and passengers. Crash tests performed by Audi in accordance with the Euro NCAP criteria confirm that the Avant and the saloon offer the highest standards of occupant protection.

The two full-size front airbags are activated in two stages, depending on the severity of the accident. Active front head restraints fitted as standard help to protect the occupants in a collision from behind.

The new Audi A6 Avant comes as standard with 7x16 inch alloy wheels, running on 205/60 R16 tyres. The particularly high-performance six-cylinder versions (from 132 kW upwards) have forged size 7.5x16-inch alloy wheels with 225/55 tyres, whereas the 4.2 eight-cylinder version comes with 17-inch wheels and 225/50 tyres as standard.

Audi Safety Equipment

The safety equipment featured as standard in the new-generation A6 is equally impressive. Active safety benefits from the latest-generation ESP with extended features, trailer oscillation logic, emergency braking signalling and considerably enhanced understeering control. ESP with these additional functions is also available on the saloon version.

The emergency braking signalling function alerts vehicles following on behind to potential hazards if the brakes are applied hard.

The trailer oscillation logic identifies dangerous swinging of the trailer and automatically applies the brakes to stabilise the outfit. The understeering control function has also been optimised: when the vehicle understeers, the system no longer brakes just the two wheels on the inside of the bend; the brakes are applied to individual or even to all four wheels simultaneously, depending on the situation. This reduces the radius of the curve and the vehicle is kept reliably on track.

Detachable ski and snowboard bag

The reversible mat now also incorporates a protective sheet that can be pulled down over the bumper. This protects the bumper during loading and unloading, or provides a clean seating surface that is handy, for example when changing your footwear after a hike.

The detachable ski and snowboard bag is another new feature that will be of particular interest to winter sports enthusiasts. Winter sports equipment can be packed away swiftly and easily in the bag while outside the car, then stowed in the luggage compartment avoiding snow or meltwater drips.

For the first time on an Audi, the tailgate opens and closes automatically at the push of a button. The opening process can also be initiated by pressing the button on the car key. The required opening angle can be infinitely varied.

Storage box for the luggage compartment

Audi's development engineers have further optimised the securing method for the safety partition net, which protects the passengers against displaced items of luggage in the event of emergency braking manoeuvres or a nose-to-tail collision. It is much easier to fold the rear seat back down one third, two thirds or entirely, as desired.

The large storage box for the luggage compartment is a particularly versatile item. Secured to the rails by means of the lashing eyes, it can be arranged in two different positions: with its opening facing to the rear, it can be used for storing smaller items of luggage and for dividing up the luggage compartment. When pushed up flush against the rear seat with its opening facing forwards, the box can be accessed via the through-loading facility in the rear seat, thus being transformed into a storage compartment that is well away from inquisitive eyes.

The further-developed reversible mat (option) has exclusive velour in the interior colour on one side; on the other side, its rubberised, easy-to-clean surface protects the load area floor.

Laguage Compartment

Where can you put your muddy walking boots after a mountain hike or your wet snowboard boots at the end of a hard day on the slopes? This easy-to-clean tray provides a simple solution.

The rail system's variability can be further enhanced as an optional extra: a telescopic rod can be engaged into both rails to divide up the luggage compartment diagonally or horizontally, thus providing another means of reliably securing items of luggage. Additional support is provided by a retaining strap, which - when both ends are engaged in a rail - lashes objects down securely against the sides of the luggage compartment at the push of a button, or divides up the compartment transversely when engaged in both rails, to keep large, bulky items of luggage in place.

The cycle rack system, which has been developed specially for the A6 Avant and is likewise mounted on the rails and around the protective tray, is a means of transporting two mountain bikes securely.

Audi Luggage Compartment

Your luggage always travels Business Class in the new Audi A6 Avant. Inside, this is emphasised both by the materials and finish of the luggage compartment and by its entirely new securing concept. Countless meticulously thought-out details set the benchmark for this class thanks to their versatility and variability.

All new A6 Avant versions have two securing rails recessed into the floor of the level, 1.05 metre wide load area (through-loading width). These are fitted with four sliding, adjustable and lockable lashing eyes in total which, along with the luggage net fitted as standard, can be used to secure individual items of luggage of almost any size. All A6 Avant versions have bag hooks integrated into the luggage compartment trim, as well as an additional luggage net to one side. A lockable side compartment can be supplied as an optional extra, for keeping objects hidden from prying eyes.

The load area floor can be folded up as a standard feature and can be locked in a variety of positions to divide up the load area. This not only provides scope for stowing objects between the rear backrest and the raised floor to prevent them from sliding around, but also provides access to the lower load area, into which a large plastic tray is integrated.

Audi's typical "tube" look

The new A6 Avant, too, comes with light units in Audi's typical "tube" look. Featuring anthracite-coloured trims, the tubes for the high and low beams appear to hover almost freely in the air, giving the front-end design of the car its very own touch of high-tech.

The headlights on the new A6 Avant come in three different versions: halogen headlights in free-form technology fitted as standard, xenon plus headlights with daytime running lights, and the xenon plus system with the dynamic adaptive light system that "can see" around a bend. It does this by pivoting the ellipsoidal module for the high-beam and low-beam headlights in synchronisation with the line of the road or a bend as the car is being driven. This greatly improves illumination of the road in front of the vehicle and to the sides, making it easier for the driver to anticipate the course of the road ahead.

A6 Avant's headlights

The Audi development engineers have deliberately limited the intensity of possible acceleration and that of brake intervention and very definitely designed the distance control as a convenience system. The adaptive cruise control system is configured such that when another vehicle that is travelling at a completely different speed is approached, the driver is alerted both visually and acoustically to the need for a conscious, situation-appropriate response. The speed range used by the system is between 30 and 200 km/h.

As on its saloon counterpart, ultra-advanced innovations are to be found behind the clear-glass covers of the A6 Avant's headlights: the dynamic technology of adaptive light, and daytime running lights in conjunction with xenon plus technology - a combination not found on any competitor model.

Audi Computer

As on the Audi A8, the new A6 Avant, and parallel the saloon, comes as an option with an intelligent "travelling companion": second generation radar-aided adaptive cruise control that automatically maintains the right distance from the vehicle ahead. Supplementing the optional cruise control function, this system significantly enhances driving convenience by automatically controlling the speed of the car relative to the vehicle ahead and the distance chosen.

A new feature in the latest generation of adaptive cruise control is the fact that the angle recorded by the sensor has doubled, clearly improving the detection range especially on winding country roads. And for the first time, the system can be combined with manual gearboxes.

Hidden discreetly out of sight, the system sensor is fitted behind the trim grille on the coolant air intake. While the car is on the move, it emits radar signals that determine how far ahead the next vehicle is. A computer then establishes whether that distance is increasing or decreasing based on the change compared with the previous measurement, and adjusts the car's own speed correspondingly by manipulating the accelerator or the brakes.

Audi A8 - MMI

As on the A8, MMI can also be supplied with DVD navigation. A DVD provides more than ten times the storage capacity of a conventional CD-ROM, coupled with a noticeably faster access time. This kind of capacity is able to cover not only the route directions for one country but almost the entire Western European road network on one single data carrier, relieving the driver of the annoying job of changing the CD when crossing borders.

A further advantage is that the navigation system calculates the route much more swiftly than on CD-based systems. This is particularly noticeable during map loading and when using the zoom function. This allows a flowing zooming in and out and enables the map to be moved in all four directions. As an alternative, the navigation system can also be operated using voice control.

Audi MMI Basic Plus

MMI basic plus can also be combined with a CD-based navigation system featuring optical destination guidance using arrow pictograms and additional text information in the driver information system presented exactly in the driver's line of vision. The system also indicates the route acoustically to the driver. Route planning takes all information provided by TMC traffic radio messaging into account.

Fitted as an option with the full range of features, MMI comes with a 7-inch colour monitor in the new Audi A6 Avant. In addition to the high-quality audio system already featured with MMI basic plus, a double tuner and a six-disc CD changer are included in the radio system.

Yet a further option also available in combination with MMI and MMI basic plus is the all-new BOSE surround sound system, no less than five amplifier channels distributing sound around the listener like in a concert hall - and in the process creating an experience in sound which sets new standards even in the supreme luxury range. The BOSE system provides an equalizer function that adapts the sound output to the speed-dependent level of background noise in the vehicle.

Audi A6 Avant - MMI Basic

The Audi A6 Avant comes as standard with MMI basic, featuring the terminal, a 6.5-inch monochrome display, as well as an integrated radio and single-disc CD player. Music output is via a 2x20 Watt amplifier and four loudspeakers in the front doors. Like all radios, the basic system comes with speed-dependent volume control and, thanks to the diversity aerial, excellent radio reception. As well as the radio functions and the broadcasting of traffic information, numerous vehicle functions such as the air conditioning and interior light configuration can be controlled via MMI basic, as on the Audi A8.

On MMI basic plus, available as an optional extra, the radio system of MMI basic can be further upgraded with extra components. A TP memory, for example, is able to record traffic messages lasting up to four minutes. Over and above the basic unit, MMI basic plus comes with a sound system incorporating a total of 10 loudspeakers (three-way combinations at the front and two-way combinations at the rear).

Luxury-class Audi A8

Even with the standard specification, the new Audi A6 Avant comes with a level of equipment by no means usual even in the luxury class. And this superiority is immediately borne out by the use of premium materials and the perfect quality of finish.

The integrated user interface which goes by the name of Multi Media Interface MMI is unparalleled by anything on offer from the competition. This infotainment platform and control concept on the new A6 Avant combines the advantages of simple operation, a perfect position and consistent operating logic.

With MMI having already set the standard in the luxury-class Audi A8, it is now continuing its story of success in the executive segment. As in the Audi A6 saloon before it, the system is available in three different configurations: as MMI basic (standard), MMI basic plus, and MMI.

Audi multiple injection processes

The pioneering common rail injection system with piezo inline injectors permits up to five separate amounts of fuel to be injected per working cycle, at an injection pressure of 1600 bar. Piezo technology enables considerably smaller and more precisely metered injection quantities. At the same time, the system responds twice as fast as conventional solenoid-valve injectors thanks to the higher speed of the injector needle. This effect is particularly important in maintaining brief intervals and high precision between the separate multiple injection processes, of which there may be up to five.

The fuel is injected into the combustion chamber via eight-hole nozzles. In conjunction with the combustion chamber recess, this results in excellent fuel preparation and consequently in particularly efficient combustion. These measures result not only in high performance and an enormous torque plateau, but also in low fuel consumption (7.0 litres per 100 kilometres), extremely low emissions and outstanding acoustics. It is especially in this latter area that the new engine undoubtedly represents the new benchmark in this class.

Latest V6 TDI engine generation

In addition to the 3.0 TDI, the A6 Avant is starting out with a further representative of the latest V6 TDI engine generation with common rail system and piezo inline injectors: the 2.7 TDI.

Like its big brother, which has a capacity of three litres, it makes use of the latest injection technology and consequently already undercuts the demanding EU4 emission limits, which will not take effect until 2006, even without a diesel particulate filter.

A new crankshaft with the stroke reduced by 8.3 millimetres, new connecting rods and different pistons result in an overall swept volume of 2,698 cm3. This engine’s key performance data are a power output of 132 kW (180 bhp) in a speed range of between 3,300 and 4,250 rpm and a peak torque of 380 Nm which is available from 1,400 rpm and remains at this high level all the way up to 3,300 rpm.

The result is a spontaneous response and tremendous pulling power even from the lowest revs. The 100 km/h mark is passed after just 8.3 seconds on the way up to a top speed of 225 km/h. But it is the mid-range sprints that are the outstanding discipline of this new high-performance engine.

The new A6 Avant 4.2 V8

The new Audi A6 Avant will be launched with a choice of no fewer than five engines installed longitudinally - three petrol and two TDI power units. All these engines share a level of power and torque that is outstanding in this segment of the market:

  • 4.2 V8 developing 246 kW (335 bhp), 420 Newton-metres
  • 3.2 V6 FSI developing 188 kW (255 bhp), 330 Newton-metres
  • 2.4 V6 developing 130 kW (177 bhp), 230 Newton-metres
  • 3.0 V6 TDI developing 165 kW (225 bhp), 450 Newton-metres
  • 2.7 V6 TDI developing 132 kW (180 bhp), 380 Newton-metres

All engines comply with the limits of the EU4 emission standard. A diesel particulate filter can in addition be ordered as an option for the TDI engines.

The six and eight-cylinder power units come from Audi's new V-engine family. Their highlights in design and construction are the 90° cylinder angle and a distance of 90 millimetres between the cylinders, compact dimensions, maintenance-free camshaft drive via a chain and low-friction roller-arm valve drive.

Audi "dynamic" mode

Gentle compression and excellent long-distance comfort are the characteristics of the "comfort" setting. If the "comfort" mode has been selected, speed-dependent lowering of the body at motorway speeds is suppressed.

The performance in the "dynamic" setting is a match for steel-spring sports suspension. In the "dynamic" mode, the car's ride height is lowered permanently by 15 millimetres.

At low speeds the adaptive air suspension establishes greater ground clearance of 15 millimetres in the lift mode if the driver so wishes. This is an additional bonus on uneven terrain. At road speeds of more than 100 km/h, the vehicle is then automatically lowered to its standard height.

In all selectable ranges, the continuously variable dampers are in addition automatically adapted to the type of road and driving style. The classic conflict between sportiness and comfort is thus overcome.

The new A6 Avant

The new A6 Avant comes with air spring struts on the front wheels, with the air suspension gaiters arranged concentrically around the infinitely adjustable shock absorbers. The air suspension gaiters consist of a special, multi-layered elastomer material with polyamide to increase strength. The advantage of this design is that the thin-walled and consequently soft-rolling gaiters lend the new A6 Avant excellent rolling properties and make the suspension highly responsive even to minor jolts.

On the rear axle, the air springs and fully controlled dampers are separated from one another. The main advantage of this configuration, as with conventional suspension, is that it allows a large through-loading width and helps to keep the floor in the luggage compartment as low as possible.

The car's ride height is held constant independent of the load by fully load-bearing air springs at the front and rear.

Thanks to its concept, air suspension provides a number of inherent advantages: the occupants benefit from a constantly smooth ride at all times, regardless of the load the vehicle is carrying. This is because the firmness of the springs adapts to the load situation at all times.

A8 as an optional extra

The new A6 Avant - and, at the same time, the A6 saloon - is available with the adaptive air suspension system as featured on the A8 as an optional extra. The combination of air suspension and an electronically controlled damping system produces the perfect synthesis of decidedly sporty handling properties and superb suspension comfort.

A choice of three different characteristics ranging from very sporty to relaxed can be selected via the central Multi Media Interface MMI control element.

The automatic mode represents the perfect all-round setting. At speeds of more than 120 km/h, the body is lowered by 15 millimetres. The change in ride height produces first of all a lower centre of gravity. At motorway speeds, the lower settings in addition reduce drag and therefore fuel consumption. If the driver then slows down to less than 70 km/h, the air suspension raises the vehicle body again to its starting position.

Audi A6 Avant model

The Audi dynamic suspension layout as featured on the new A6 Avant is based on proven sports technology: the refined four-link front suspension acknowledged as a typical Audi feature and the self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension carried over from the Audi A8 - a combination used on both the front-wheel-drive and quattro models.

The result is a standard of dynamic driving behaviour that is beyond compare, plus ease of control far superior to the competition. This is also due in no small measure to the speed-dependent servotronic power steering featured as standard, supplementing the precise handling of the new A6 Avant with even more sensitive steering precision.

Audi A6 Avant model

A gain in torsional rigidity of up to 25 percent: this advance compared with the bodyshell of the predecessor version - in itself widely praised as very robust - is reflected in the new Audi A6 Avant model's vibrational comfort, road behaviour and interior acoustics.

The rigidity of the steel bodyshell is itself the result of methodically enhanced joining technologies plus optimised panel profiles. The improved vibrational behaviour moreover lays the foundations for the harmonious but nevertheless sporty tuning of the chassis. In conjunction with the direct, extremely stable link connecting the steering column to the module subframe, this body configuration is the basic prerequisite for the precise handling of the A6 Avant.

The A6 Avant

Sporty design and perfect ergonomics - these are the features that characterise the driving area. A joint cover at the top connects the instrument cluster and the upper part of the centre console, which is turned slightly towards the driver, to form one common unit.

The instrument cluster: the round coolant temperature and fuel gauges are located inside the newly designed, teardrop-shaped surrounds, next to the two large rev counter and speedometer dials.

The A6 Avant likewise features the new generation of Audi steering wheels. As a characteristic feature of the three and four-spoke steering wheels, the single-frame trapezoid with the four Audi rings is cited on the central airbag cap. Its oval exterior geometry likewise picks up on the shape of the single-frame grille.

A4 Avant and the A3 Sportback.

The decidedly horizontal design of the rearward structure, with the two-section rear lights curving well in towards the centre, gives the vehicle an air of sturdiness and stability. The basic proportions and the design of the lights clearly indicate the blood ties with two other recent additions to Audi's range of five-door versions: the A4 Avant and the A3 Sportback.

A glance at the front end, with the trapezoidal-shape single-frame radiator grille, reveals the A6 Avant to be a member of the latest generation of Audi models. The latest lighting technology is visible behind the clear glass covers of the headlights: as an option, the new A6 Avant is available with dynamic adaptive light technology incorporating high-intensity xenon plus light units and daytime running lights.

Inside the new A6 Avant, it is also obvious at first glance that this is a brand-new model generation. The high, wide centre console, for example, with controls and switches within perfect reach, emphasises the sporty interior architecture that integrates the driver as the central player.

Audi A6 Avant

Here is a car that features notable design unity: measuring 4.93 metres in length, 1.86 metres in width, and 1.46 metres in height, the new Audi A6 Avant visibly sets a new standard. The lines of the car combine the clear architecture typical of Audi with other core elements of the brand's progressive design.

The already classic proportions of the Avant's silhouette, with its high shoulder line, narrow window area, coupé-like roofline and flat, sloping tail end, have been infused with a new degree of tension: the contours of the gently rising, curved shoulder line and the powerful, sweeping motion of the dynamic line above the side sills give the entire body of the car a forward-moving, tapered appearance.

This impression is even more dominant than on the saloon, because the basic proportions of the A6 Avant are lent that extra forward urge as a result of the rising dynamic line. The optical centre of gravity of the vehicle body is clearly forward of the rear axle, thus giving the tail end a lighter appearance.

Audi S4 quattro

To sum up the rationale behind this important win for the S4 quattro, Chairman of the Ulster Motoring Writers Association Jim McCauley said: “This top model from the A4 range represents all that the Audi brand stands for, not only in terms of performance from their wide range of petrol and diesel engines but also the fact that no other company offers such a wide choice of four-wheel-drives. Combined with a range of gearbox options and sophisticated secondary safety measures, the Audi S4 represents the ultimate in current automotive technology.”

Director of Audi UK Kevin Rose added: “We are obviously delighted that the S4 has triumphed here in the face of such stiff competition both in the sports saloon arena and beyond. We are particularly pleased to receive these honours based on the attributes of the outgoing S4 quattro, many of which have been improved upon in the latest 2005 model.”
