Small Cars are getting safer, but not safe enough by Times Online and PA News

Smaller cars are getting safer for their occupants but still failing to get high marks for pedestrian protection, the latest results from a Europe-wide crash-test programme revealed today. Seven of the 14 models tested received a maximum five stars for occupant safety in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) tests.

But no cars got the maximum of four stars for protecting pedestrians in the event of an accident, with nine models only being awarded one star. Euro NCAP chairman Claes Tingvall said: “Manufacturers have realised that the occupants of smaller vehicles demand optimum safety standards. It is not merely a right reserved for those that can afford executive vehicles. “The Ford Focus, Renault Modus, Citroen C4 and Seat Altea have performed particularly well in terms of occupant and child protection. “I am particularly delighted that the Citroen C4 and the Seat Altea also offer an enhanced level of protection for pedestrians.

“It is a major disappointment that nine of the 14 models tested were worthy of just one star for pedestrian safety. We believe that the public will be demanding more when they make their choice of new vehicle.” UK Transport Minister David Jamieson said: “I am pleased that manufacturers are continuing to improve car occupant safety, with the majority of the cars tested achieving five stars for occupant protection. “It is encouraging to have two cars achieving three stars for pedestrian protection although the majority are still only achieving one star. “I would urge manufacturers to implement improvements in pedestrian protection ahead of the European standards which will take effect from 2005.” Here are the star ratings for the models in the latest set of tests.

‘British American’ Ford and their brokers - where 25% of the company's entire global engine production, and all its diesel engines, now come from the UK at a much cheaper rate than anywhere else on the world. These cheap rates ensure that the United Kingdom (UK) is ahead of the rest of the manufactures in car exporting. British GM Vauxhall and their Brokers - where production at Ellesmere Port is to be expanded to meet demand for the new Astra cars. ‘British Japanese’ Nissan and their English brokers who blazed the trail to the UK in the early 1980s, and continues to run the most productive car manufacturing site in Europe.

Great Britain - Especially the English industry is continuing to show a firm commitment to the science budget - more than double since 1997 to £3.3 billion by 2007/8.
